ummmmm ok i never read this book but I heard about it on television and all I can say is this….i went to college with the author. she seemed to be a nice girl BUT a beauty expert she is not. Not a particularly pretty girl nor the kind of girl who stands out for being beautiful, polished or well-groomed (you might instead pick up on her physical flaws if you noticed her at all) - and not a girl who you would consider an “expert” on most any thing, least of all beauty. I was in shock to learn she is hawking her ideas on the beauty industry in any other capacity than “don’t do what i do”, just not the go-to-girl for this in of stuff. She ostensibly may have learned lessons from the true beauties and other girls “in the beauty know” on campus and in New York. But wouldn’t you rather go to someone like them?? like i said, nothing against her just save your money for something - or someONE - a bit more authentic. Listen, we can all look and dress and present ourselves in whateve way we want, but to make money, in good conscience, off one’s “knowledge” and purported “expertise” is a matter of worthiness and legitimacy (amongst other things). And Ms. Haobsh, I believe, is none of those.

I had a hard time reading this book, and here’s why: I simply got fed up with the continual assumption that your appearance is all that important. I’m probably not the publisher’s target market, huh? Partially my impatience with this mindset has to do with my age. Like many women in their mid-thirties, I have developed an improved understanding of what suits me, and how to achieve my best look more easily. But that understanding of who I am also says that ultimately “beauty” is just not very important.

I also found the self-obsessed musings of the author hard to read because my daughter has alopecia areata. In her four short years of life, she has grown and lost several full heads of hair. As someone who, like the author admits of herself, has always been somewhat vain of her hair, this has been a real growing experience for me (no pun intended.) While the author is undoubtedly intelligent and amusing, I have to believe that had she experienced the unpredictable and uncurable loss and re-growth cycle of alopecia on her own hair, she would have found something more meaningful to turn her talents towards. If you are looking for a book to give you details of how to put in a ponytail, or what different laser treatments consist of and which to chose, you’ll probably get something out of this book (or any beauty magazine, frankly). But if you’re ultimately interested in a book that helps you find that spark of confidence, reinforcing that true beauty that comes from the inside and depends heavily on your level of confidence (which really has nothing to do with your looks), this book falls far short. It reads as if the author is still fighting to find that confidence herself. There are no “beauty myths” debunked here.
